Modern day apprenticeships have come a long way from the old indenture system but they still maintain the core essence of vocational learning whilst still incorporating recognised qualifications.
Apprenticeships have three elements namely skills, knowledge and experience, all of which are combined with the foundations for learning and development. In practice, this means that most apprenticeships comprise of the apprentice framework, namely:
- The appropriate NVQ
The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) is a practical based qualification and is usually assessed on the job.
-
The Technical certificate
The technical certificate is a knowledge based qualification and is usually studied at the same time and is complementary to the NVQ.
-
Key Skills or Functional Skills
The key skills studied usually include communication, application of number, information and communication technology.
From the decision process and throughout the duration of their apprenticeship scheme employers and candidates are guided and supported by the apprenticeship development unit. For more information about how to get involved please get in touch.
